Additional Central Assistance to Rajasthan, Nagaland: Important Features
On 16th June 2022, under the chairmanship of Amit Shah, a high-level committee (HLC) gave its approval to provide extra funds to Nagaland and Rajasthan under the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). These two states were badly impacted by droughts in 2021-22.
What amount was approved by the HLC?
The HLC approved funds worth Rs 1,043.23 crore which are divided into:
- Nagaland: Rs 39.28 crore
- Rajasthan: Rs 1,003.95 crore
This extra monetary support is on top of the funds that were released by the Centre for the States of the country under the State Disaster Response Funds (SDRF).
How much funds were released by the Central government under the NDRF and SDRF in FY 2021-22?
During FY 2021-22, funds dispersed by the centre were:
- SDRF: Rs 17,747.2 divided among 28 states
- NDRF: Rs 7,342.3 crore divided among 11 states
What is National Disaster Response Fund?
The NDRF is a central government-managed fund that is used to provide for all the expenses that were sustained due to responding to disaster, providing emergency relief and rehabilitation of the citizens after and during a disaster.
What is State Disaster Response Fund?
It is a fund that can be availed by the State governments to mitigate disasters and come up with responses. The Central Government provides 75 percent of this fund for the states and UTs falling under the general category States whereas 90 percent for states and UTs under the special category. i.e., Northeast states, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.
