Article 244A
Article 244A of the Indian Constitution legally backs the creation of an ?autonomous state? within the northeastern state of Assam in certain tribal regions. It allows the setting up of a local legislature or Council of Ministers or both for undertaking local administration. It became a part of the Indian Constitution following the passing of the Twenty-second Constitutional Amendment Act, 1969.
Days after the signing of the Karbi Peace Accord, an umbrella body of 24 indigenous organisations protested against the peace pact and demanded the Central Government to declare Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao an ?autonomous state? under Article 244A.
