India has achieved another milestone in the fight to COVID-19. The Case Fatality rate (CFR) in India reduced below 1.5%. The Government of India have ensured that the mortality numbers is kept minimum and within manageable limits. India’s fatality rates are amongst the lowest in the world and there is also a steady decline on the daily basis. The Government used the crucial strategy i.e. test-trace-track and treat, to contain the COVID situation under control.

What is Case Fatality Rate (CFR)?

CFR is the ratio of the proportion of the people died from the particular disease to all the individuals diagnosed with that disease for a specific time period. CFR generally used as a prediction for the severity happened in the near future by the disease. If the rate or percentage of Case Fatality Rate is high, that will indicate severe situation and poor results of the measures taken. The CFR rate varies according to the actions taken in terms of treatments.

Reasons of reduced CFR

  • Effective and efficient plan of action for the containment of disease.
  • Standardised clinical management procedures.
  • Increased testing.
  • Timely clinical management and diagnosis of individuals.
  • Typical strategy to treat that includes use of anticoagulants and non-invasive oxygen.
  • Effective implementation by all the agencies including state governments as well as Union Territories that led to early identification of cases and timely diagnosis.

e-ICU by AIIMS

e-ICU is the exclusive initiative launched by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to enhance the capacity of the ICU doctors for the critical patients in clinical management headed for reducing the fatalities in India. In this initiative, consultation sessions are arranged by AIIMS in which the doctors from ICUs can receive and share the knowledge of the domain experts in India.
