Forest Rights Act, 2006

Forest Rights Act or the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 is a legislation that provides forest-dwellers the rights on land and other resources in forests. The rights provided by this law is given to communities who have resided in the forests for generations.
The rationale for the enactment of the Forest Rights Act is to redress the ?historical injustice? against forest dwellers, while also including provisions on the conservation and sustainable maintenance of forests. However, it has also been opposed because of its role in the massive destruction of forest in India.
