India-US Defence Technology and Trade Initiative group meeting held virtually

On September 16, 2020, the tenth Defence Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) Group meeting was held virtually. The meeting is usually held twice a year alternating between India and US. For the first time, the group meeting has been held virtually.


The initiative signed statement of intent to strengthen dialogue on defence technology cooperation. Also, the grouping reported several on-going activities and collaborative opportunities targeted for completion on priority.

The main aim of the grouping is focused on land, air, naval and aircraft carrier technologies that were established under DTTI.

What is DTTI?

The DTTI is a flexible mechanism to make sure the senior leaders of the both India and US engage consistently to strengthen opportunities in the field of defence. It aims to include defence industrial base, explore new areas of technological development and expand India-US ties.

About DTTI

The India-US DTTI was formed in 2012. The initiative paved way for the countries to sign agreements such as BECA, LEMOA, COMCASA, GSOMIA. The GSOMIA agreement will help in upgradation of India to STA-1 status. It will help in exchanging classified information between India and US military.

The DTTI has also helped to enhance bilateral exercises being held between the countries. The exercises have become so important for the countries as they help in understanding each other’s limitations and capabilities.

Projects under DTTI

During the meet, the projects to be executed have been identified as near, medium, and long-term projects. Near-term projects include Air-launched Small Unmanned Systems, ISTAR (Intelligence-Surveillance-Targeting and Reconnaissance), Small Arms Technology.

The medium-term projects under the initiative are maritime domain awareness solution, VAMRAM (Virtual Augmented Mixed Reality for Aircraft Maintenance). The two long term projects include CURAM (Counter-UAS, Rocket, Artillery and Mortar) system for Indian Army and Terrain Shaping Obstacle system.

The ongoing pandemic has delayed the timely execution of these projects.
