India’s highest Meteorological Centre
Union Minister Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the India Meteorological Department’s centre at Leh in Ladakh via video conferencing. It is located at 3,500 metres above sea level in Leh. This makes it the highest Meteorological Centre in India. Despite having only two districts – Kargil and Leh – Ladakh has different micro-climatic zones ranging from plains, cold desert, hills and extreme dry places. Thus, there is a need for specific and localised weather monitoring for each of these zones.
