Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight, IDCF-2022: Key Facts

On 14th June 2022, the ‘Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight – 2022’ (IDFC) was launched by Bharati Pravin Pawar, Minister of State for Health. This is an awareness programme that is being carried out from 13th to 27th June 2022 across India.

What is the aim of the IDFC programme?

The IDFC was launched with the objective of ending diarrhoea-related child mortality. The latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS) has highlighted that only 60.6 per cent of the children in India aged 5 or less were provided with Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and only 30.5 per cent were provided zinc. This shows a lack of awareness regarding the importance of ORS and Zinc for a child. Hence, the IDFC programme is also held to generate awareness regarding diarrhoea and how it can be mitigated

According to the Sample Registration System (SRS) 2019 report, what is India’s child mortality rate?

According to the SRS 2019 report, India’s child mortality rate has declined. The rate stands at 35 deaths per 1000 live births which earlier was 45 deaths per live birth. Still, even in the present times, diarrhoea-related deaths are still happening in India in children aged under five.

What is the biggest cause of diarrhoea in children?

One of the major causes of diarrhoea in children is dehydration. The other causes are:

  • antibiotics usage
  • change in the diet of the baby
  • parasitic or bacterial infection

How can diarrhoea be prevented?

Diarrhoea is preventable if certain measures can be followed like:

  • proper hygiene such as the washing of hands
  • breastfeeding
  • proper nutrition is provided to the children
  • access to safe drinking water,

What activities will be held under IDFC?

Under IDFC, various activities are being implemented to control and prevent diarrhoea-related deaths. The activities include:

  • generation of awareness
  • advocacy regarding the disease
  • service strengthening so that diarrhoea-related cases can be managed
  • Setting up of ORS-Zinc corners,
  • ASHA workers will be providing ORS sachets to households
  • Promotion of hygiene

A major activity under the IDFC will be the visit of field workers such as ASHA, Anganwadi, etc to households having children aged below 5 years. There the workers will be promoting ways to avoid diarrhoea.
