The Malayan Giant Squirrel is one of the 3 species of giant squirrels found in India- the others being the Indian Giant Squirrel and Grizzled Giant Squirrel. The species could disappear by 90% from the northeast region by 2050 according to recent studies. The species is found in West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. The reasons for their disappearance include fragmentation of forests, deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, hunting, etc.
