Mascot & Logo for FIDE Chess Olympiad: Key Points

The 44th edition of the FIDE Chess Olympiad’s official logo, hashtag, and mascot was unveiled by the AICF President Dr. Sanjay Kapoor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin in Chennai. This sporting event is planned to be held in July 2022.

What is the name of the mascot?

The name of the mascot is ‘Thambi’. Thambi, in the Tamil language, means younger or little brother. Just before the mascot’s launch, an announcement was made stating that a Torch Relay will take place in this year’s event. This torch relay has never been held in the Olympiad’s history and this will be the debut event. From the 44th edition, the torch relay will be held in every subsequent edition.

  • There will be other events that will be held with the objective of promoting the game of Chess.
  • This tournament will be hosted in Chennai from 28th July to 10th August 2022.

What was the original schedule of this tournament?

The original plan was to host this event from 5th to 17th August 2020 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Later FIDE chose Moscow as the host but it was cancelled due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

What is FIDE?

FIDE is a global organization whose headquarter is located in Switzerland. FIDE links several national-level chess federations from across the planet and also functions as the ruling body of international chess competitions that are held across the globe. This organization was instituted on 20th July 1924 in Paris, France. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized FIDE. At present, FIDE has 200 members.
