Massospora cicadina

Massospora cicadina is a fungal pathogen that infects only 13 and 17-year periodical cicadas. Its infection causes infertility, disease transmission and eventual deaths of cicadas. Besides eating away the insides of the cicadas, these pathogens can increase the hosts’ sex drive to attract new host for the pathogen. This is to help the fungus spread across the cicadas’ population.
