New Logo for ‘Ayurveda Aahar’: Key Points

The ‘Ayurveda Aahar’ logo was launched by Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on 7th June 2022 on the occasion of World Food Safety Day. The logo, which is similar to other standard food product logos, would be creating a unique identity of Ayurveda Aahar and allow for easy identification. This measure will reinforce the quality of Ayurvedic products.

What do you mean by Ayurveda Aahar?

According to FSSAI’s Food Safety and Standards (Ayurveda Aahar) Regulations, 2021, Ayurveda Aahar is all those foods that are prepared in accordance with the recipes, processes, or ingredients as per methods that have been described in the books of Ayurveda which are listed under ‘Schedule A’ of these regulations. It also includes other products having other botanical ingredients in accordance with Ayurvedic Aahar but doesn’t include proprietary Ayurvedic medicines, Ayurvedic drugs, cosmetics, medicinal products, psychotropic substances, narcotics, and herbs that are listed under Schedule E of the Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1940.

What is the design of the logo?

According to the FSSAI, the logo’s design is that it contains the initial letters of the words Ayurveda and Aahar in Devanagari and English. In this logo, the English letter ‘A’ and the Hindi letter Aa have been merged in such a manner that they appear to be in a single form. The logo contains 5 symbolic leaves, representing the five elements namely:

  • water,
  • ether,
  • fire
  • air
  • Earth.

The green colour of the logo stands for biotic, natural, organic, wholesome, and herbal.

What committee will be set up by the FSSAI?

An expert committee will be set up by the FSSAI under the Ministry of Ayush. The committee will consist of relevant experts including FSSAI representatives and they will be providing recommendations on the approval of products and claims. The committee will also be empowered to address concerns regarding licensing or registration or certification or testing or laboratory accreditation or quality issues that are related to Ayurveda Aahar. Food business operators must adhere to quality parameters that will be defined under Food Safety and Standards Regulations and relevant BIS specifications.
