PM Modi inaugurates Supreme Court building of Mauritius

Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Mauritian Prime Minister Pravin Kumar Jugnauth on Thursday virtually inaugurated the new Supreme Court building at Port Louis. The building has been constructed with Indian assistance as India’s sign of cooperation with countries in the Indian Ocean Region. The inauguration process was done online via video conferencing in the presence of senior members of the judiciary from Mauritius and other esteemed delegates from both the country as well.

About the Project:

The newly inaugurated building is one of its kind first Indian assisted project withing the capital city of Port Louis. It has been completed with the grant assistance of S28.12 million from India. The newly constructed building provides state of the art facilities. It is a fully green building sprawling over several acres of land. It is a symbol of cooperation and shared values between the two countries.

India has been constantly engaged with the various countries based in the Indian Ocean Region and it is focused on people-oriented projects.

A Special Economic Package (SEP) of USD 353 million was announced in the year 2016, and it was under India’s grant assistance, for five priority infrastructure projects.

  • Metro Express Project- USD 275 m (Phase -1 completed);
  • Supreme Court Building- USD 30 m (completed);
  • New ENT Hospital- USD 14 m (completed);
  • Social Housing project- USD 20 m (ongoing);
  • e-Tablets- USD 14 m (completed).

Lines of Credit (LOC) of USD 600 million at concessional terms have been announced and the focus is on developmental projects. Assistance in the health care sector is being extended for the construction of — a Renal Unit; 4 Medi-clinics and two Area Health Centers AHCs (USD 12 million).

Also, India was the first to send a medical consignment to Mauritius to deal with the COVID pandemic and this included Hydrocloroquine (HCQ) tablet and other essential medicines. Along with the batch of HCQ tablet, a medical team was sent, and a special consignment of Ayurvedic medicines.
