The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) was launched by the Indian Government last year to ensure food security amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The scheme is being implemented by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Consumer Affairs Ministry. It was extended recently until November 2021 so as to protect the needs of the economically vulnerable.
Between May and June this year, nearly 7 crore people in Maharashtra and 5.32 lakh people from Goa have benefited from this scheme amid the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Maharashtra was allocated 7 lakh metric tonnes of foodgrains under this scheme for the two-month period.
