Govt. allows manufacture and import of machine-made polyester national flags

The Union government has allowed manufacture and import of machine-made polyester national flags by amending the 2002 Flag Code of India. The rules earlier permitted only flags made by “hand-spun and woven wool or cotton or silk khadi bunting” while the import of machine-made flags was banned in 2019. A recent revision to the flag code stated, “The National Flag shall be made of hand spun and hand woven or machine made, cotton, polyester, wool, silk khadi bunting.”

India ranked 120th on 17 Sustainable Development Goals

India has slipped three spots from last year’s 117 to rank 120 on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted as a part of the 2030 agenda by 192 United Nations member states in 2015. This was revealed in the Centre for Science and Environment’s State of India’s Environment Report, 2022, released by Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav on March 1, 2022. India’s rank dropped primarily because of major challenges in 11 SDGs including zero hunger, good health and wellbeing, gender equality and sustainable cities and communities. India’s overall Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) score was 66 out of 100.

Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani on March 1, 2022 launched “भविष्यो रक्षति रक्षित:” as the new motto of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on its 17th foundation day in New Delhi.

PNB to clear cheques of Rs 10 lakh & above after customer confirmation

State-run Punjab National Bank (PNB) on March 1, 2022 said high-value cheques of Rs 10 lakh and above will be cleared after reconfirmation with the issuer under the Positive Pay System (PPS) from April 4 to protect the bank customers against large-value cheque frauds. The Delhi-headquartered lender introduced PPS for cheques of Rs 50,000 and above presented in CTS clearing from January 1, 2021, in accordance with the RBI guidelines.

Ilker Ayci turns down Tata Group’s offer to be CEO & MD of Air India

Ilker Ayci has turned down the Tata Group’s offer to be Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India. On February 14, Tata Sons had said Ayci, former chairman of Turkish Airlines, would take charge as CEO and MD of the debt-laden airline bought out by the Tatas in a $2.4 billion equity and debt deal.

India ranked third in billionaire population globally in 2021

The number of ultra-high-net worth-individuals, having net assets of USD 30 million (about Rs 226 crore) or more, in India increased 11 per cent last year on the back of buoyant equity markets and digital revolution, according to Knight Frank. India also ranked third in billionaire population globally in 2021. US is number one with 748 billionaires, followed by Chinese mainland at 554 billionaires and India with 145 billionaires. In its latest edition of The Wealth Report 2022, property consultant Knight Frank said the number of ultra-high-net-worth-individuals (UHNWIs) globally increased by 9.3 per cent in 2021 to 6,10,569, from 5,58,828 in the previous year.


UNAIDS observes Zero Discrimination Day on March 1

The Zero Discrimination Day was observed by UNAIDS on March 1, 2022. Observation of the day is aimed at highlighting the urgent need to take action to end the inequalities surrounding income, sex, age, health status, occupation, disability, sexual orientation, drug use, gender identity, race, class, ethnicity and religion that are prevalent around the world. This year’s theme is: “Remove laws that harm, create laws that empower”.

Nepal’s Parliament approves USD 500 million MCC aid

Nepalese Parliament approved a $500 million U.S. government aid program Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) overcoming domestic political divisions and objections from China. China which is in tussle with US for influence in the Himalayan nation said in a sharp reaction on March 1, 2022 that Washington should not undermine the sovereignty of other countries through “coercive diplomacy”.

US expels 12 members of Russia’s UN mission for ‘espionage activities’

The United States said on March 1, 2022 that it was expelling 12 members of Russia’s UN mission from America for being “intelligence operatives”.  A spokeswoman for the US mission to the UN said those ordered to leave had “abused their privileges of residency in the United States by engaging in espionage activities that are adverse to our national security.”

IPCC releases report ‘Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability’

Human-induced climate change is causing dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and affecting the lives of billions of people around the world, despite efforts to reduce the risks. People and ecosystems least able to cope are being hardest hit, said scientists in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability, released on February 28, 2022. The Working Group II contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report of IPCC provides a detailed assessment of climate change impacts, risks and adaptation in cities, where more than half the world’s population lives.

28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards presented in US

The 28th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, honouring the best achievements in film and television performances for the year 2021, was presented on February 27, 2022 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. The award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture’ was won bt the cast of CODA – Eugenio Derbez, Daniel Durant, Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, Marlee Matlin, and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo. The award for ‘Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role’ was won by Will Smith – King Richard as Richard Williams. ‘Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role’ award was given to Jessica Chastain – The Eyes of Tammy Faye as Tammy Faye Bakker. Screen Actors Guild Awards (also known as SAG Awards) are accolades given by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).


ISSF World Cup in Cairo: Saurabh Chaudhary wins gold

Indian shooting ace Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event, opening the country’s account in the year’s first ISSF World Cup in Cairo on March 1, 2022. Esha Singh bagged the second medal for the country after she won a silver in the women’s 10m air pistol event.

World Taekwondo strips Vladimir Putin of black belt over Ukraine invasion

World Taekwondo has strongly condemned the brutal attacks on innocent lives in Ukraine, which go against the body’s vision of “Peace is More Precious than Triumph” and the World Taekwondo values of respect and tolerance. “In this regard, World Taekwondo has decided to withdraw the honorary 9th dan black belt conferred to Vladimir Putin in November 2013,” stated an official statement.
