The Vishwakarma Vatikas were set up in Hunar Haats (talent fairs) in Uttar Pradesh. It was launched to showcase the traditional skills and craftsmanship.

- The Vishwakarma Vatikas were launched by the Minority Affairs Ministry.
- It was launched in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh that has more than 50% of Muslim population. And thus, was criticized as a strategy to cater OBCs (Other Backward Castes) ahead of elections.
- The Vishwakarma Vatikas will focus on communities such as Kewat-Mallah, Kahar, Kundja, Kumhar, Gaddi-Ghosi, Gujjar, Jogi, Qureshi, Teli, Mali, Nut, Darji, Badhyi, Banjara, Momin-Julaha, Chudidar, Mansuri, Rangrej, Dhuniya, Halwayi, Lohar, Dhobi, Hajjam, etc.
- They will promote traditional skills of the artisans and craftmen.
- The Vishwakarma Vatikas will act as a gateway for the artisans to display their handmade products.
Benefits
The Government of India provides Rs 1,500 daily allowance when it calls the artisans to participate in Hunar Haats. Also, the GoI will provide transportation cost and a companion to guide them.
Need for Vishwakarma Vatikas
The main problem faced by the artisans and craftsmen in India is low productivity. Also, there are no market linkages. Their value chains are fragmented. The consumers of craft products are becoming urbanized. This forces majority of the artisans to sell their products in local markets. They have few opportunities to bring in new customers. Above all, they are dominated by the middlemen. The middlemen often exploit the artisans by paying them a fraction of their wages. The Vishwakarma Vatikas will help solve all the above issues.
