Exercise SHAKTI 2019: India-France Counter Terrorism Operation

The ‘Exercise SHAKTI’ is an event of immense significance in the world of military defense exercises. Conducted biennially, this exercise alternates its location between India and France. It is an arena that fosters a high degree of physical fitness, the sharing of tactical drill knowledge, and mutual learning of best practices. Its 2019 edition was conducted from 31 October to 13 November in Rajasthan, India. The prime focus of this exercise was counter-terrorism operations, with special emphasis on operations within semi-desert terrain. ‘Exercise SHAKTI’ is not an isolated program, but a part of the intricate web of defense exercises between India and France. These exercises cover different arms of the military and are classified into three types. ‘Varuna’ is the naval exercise, ‘Garuda’ concerns the Air force, and ‘Shakti’ is the army exercise. These exercises aim at showcasing strength, dominance, and mutual understanding between the two countries.

Gagan Shakti and Other Joint Exercises

In addition to these exercises, India conducts ‘Gagan Shakti’ with the Indian Air Force. This display of air dominance extends over the entire area of the Indian Ocean Region, including all terrains – desert, high altitude, and maritime scenarios. This exercise also focuses on special operations like aerial combat, surface-to-air combat, paratrooper assault, and medical evacuation. In addition to these, India also partakes in joint military exercises with other nations. ‘Garuda Shakti’ is a joint military endeavor between India and Indonesia, while ‘Mitra Shakti’ is an exercise carried out in collaboration with Sri Lanka.
