In the latest news, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has revoked the citizenship of Chennamaneni Ramesh, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Vemulawada in Telangana. The MHA determined that Ramesh had acquired his citizenship under section 5(1)(f) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 by utilising dishonest means. These included fraudulent activity, false representation, and hiding crucial facts. This led to the implementation of provisions from section 10(2) of the Act, thereby resulting in the cancellation of his citizenship.
This development reminds us that an individual must be an Indian citizen to be eligible to participate or vote in any election.
Understanding Section 5(1)(f)
Section 5 of the Citizenship Act 1955 outlines the conditions for attaining citizenship through registration. Specifically, Section 5(1)(f) identifies a category of people who can apply for registration. To qualify, the applicant must be a person of full age and capacity who, or either of their parents, was previously a citizen of Independent India. Additionally, they should have been living in India for a year immediately before applying for registration.
Deprivation of Citizenship: Section 10(2)
Section 10 governs the deprivation of citizenship. Under Section 10(2), it is established that the Central Government has the authority to strip a registrant of their Indian citizenship under certain conditions. These scenarios include instances when the citizenship was obtained fraudulently, falsely, or by omission of vital facts. Further instances would be if the individual displays disloyalty towards the Constitution of India, engages in unlawful activities during wartime, has been sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years in any country within five years of registration, or has been living outside India for a continuous period of seven years.

Ensuring Fairness: Section 10(3)
Section 10(3) provides safeguards against arbitrary citizenship deprivation. It establishes that the Central Government should not deprive a person of their citizenship unless it is convinced that their continued citizenship would not be favourable to public good. This clause serves to protect individuals from undue cancellation of their citizenship and maintains the integrity of the process.
