National Youth Day (NYD) is an important event that is celebrated every year on January 12. This day marks the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, a key figure in Indian history and philosophy. First declared as National Youth Day by the government in 1984, this occasion is dedicated to honouring Swami Vivekananda’s significant contributions to the country.
The main purpose of NYD is to encourage rational thinking among young individuals. The youth are stimulated to commit to and carry forward the values, principles, and beliefs that Vivekananda embraced throughout his life.
National Youth Festival: A Gathering of Cultural Diversity
Each year, alongside NYD, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in association with different state governments, organizes the National Youth Festival (NYF). Incepted in 1995, the festival serves as a platform where young people can interact and share their unique social and cultural backgrounds.
In 2020, the 23rd NYF was organized jointly by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Uttar Pradesh government. Upholding the ethos of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’, the festival resonates the unity in diversity of India. The theme of NYF 2020 was ‘FIT YOUTH FIT INDIA’, emphasizing the importance of physical and mental fitness among the youth.
