Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana Awards Announced

The Ministry of Women & Child Development has acknowledged several states, Union territories (UTs), and districts for their exceptional performance in implementing the maternity benefit programme, known as the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), since its initiation in 2017. The rewards scheme is aimed at recognizing and promoting the efforts made by these entities in deploying this beneficial initiative.

Top Ranking Performers

For states and UTs with a population exceeding 1 crore, Madhya Pradesh earned the top spot, followed closely by Andhra Pradesh and then Haryana. Among states and UTs with a population of less than 1 crore, Dadra & Nagar Haveli outshone Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh to secure the first position.

In terms of districts, Indore in Madhya Pradesh, Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, and South Salmara Mankachar in Assam were the top three districts with a population of more than 1 crore. On the other hand, Serchhip in Mizoram, Unain in Himachal Pradesh, and Puducherry were the best performing districts among those having less than 1 crore people.

The Matru Vandana Saptah Event

The Matru Vandana Saptah (MVS) event was held from the 2nd through to the 8th of December 2019. MVS was organized with the objective of amplifying the implementation of the PMMVY. It also served as a platform to foster a healthy competitive environment among the states and UTs.

The theme of the MVS was “Towards building a healthy nation – Surakshit Janani, Viksit Dharini,” which translates to “Safe mother, developed earth”. This theme captures the essence of the event – ensuring the wellbeing of mothers and the holistic development of the nation.

Behind the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is an initiative launched by the Ministry of Women & Child Development. This maternity benefit programme has its roots in the government’s commitment to safeguard the health of pregnant women and lactating mothers. The programme offers financial aid to expecting and nursing mothers, ensuring they have access to nutritious food and quality healthcare services.

The PMMVY plays a pivotal role in women’s health care by reducing maternal mortality and ensuring child survival. The scheme also emphasizes the critical importance of the first thousand days of a child’s life, covering the period from conception until the child turns two years old. The scheme is in line with the government’s broader mission of providing comprehensive maternal and child health care services, fostering a healthier future for India.

The recognition and accolades received by various states, UTs, and districts underline their commitment to the PMMVY and their sustained efforts to improve women and child health services. The effective implementation and success of the scheme depend greatly on these localized efforts, ultimately contributing to the broader objective of building a healthier and stronger nation. With continued dedication, it is hoped that more regions will step up their efforts and join the ranks of the top performers in the coming years.
