The annual celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd has been a pivotal event promoting environmental consciousness since its inception half a century ago. Born out of a modern environmental movement that began in 1970, Earth Day’s golden jubilee in 2020 was themed “Climate Action”, emphasizing the urgency of proactive endeavors to counter global warming.
The Genesis of Earth Day
Initiated in 1970, Earth Day is now a globally coordinated event, helmed by the Earth Day Network, with commemorations taking place in over 193 countries annually. The idea for this unique observance was conceived by Gaylord Nelson, an American environmentalist and politician, recognizing the necessity of fostering awareness about our planet’s health.
Earth Day embodies a collective responsibility towards nature, as underscored by the 1992 Rio Declaration (Earth Summit). This collective responsibility aims to establish equilibrium between economic, social, and environmental needs of the current and future generations.
Notably, April 22nd is also significant as the date when the Paris Agreement was opened for signatures at the UN Headquarters in New York in 2016. The agreement represents a global effort against climate change.
World Earth Day: A Call to Protect Nature
World Earth Day serves as a reminder for individuals to adopt more environment-friendly practices. It is an occasion to appreciate the abundant natural resources we’re endowed with and to pledge to safeguard them.
World Earth Day 2020: A Digital Celebration Amid COVID-19
The 50th anniversary of Earth Day was marked digitally due to the COVID-19 pandemic necessitating people to stay indoors. Google celebrated the day with an interactive doodle dedicated to bees, highlighting their crucial role in our ecosystem.
Despite physical limitations, engagement remained high with events like ’24 hours of action’ and 22 challenges participants could take up from their homes. These challenges ranged from assessing your carbon footprint and conducting a plastic audit to committing to a zero-waste day and incorporating at least one plant-based meal daily.
