The recent breakthrough of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi, in partnership with Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), has brought Ayurvedic medicine to the forefront of COVID-19 preventive measures. The team discovered that the Ayurvedic herb Ashwagandha holds substantial therapeutic and preventive potential against the virus.
Global Efforts Towards COVID-19 Drug Design and Development
Since the publication of the coronavirus genome and structure, efforts towards drug designing, devising, and development have amplified globally. Tools from informatics and experimental tools are being utilized around the world. The collaborative research from IIT-Delhi and AIST is a part of this global initiative. They employed Ashwagandha and propolis-based compounds targeting the primary enzyme of the coronavirus, known as the Main protease or Mpro.
The Role of Mpro in Viral Replication
Mpro plays a crucial role in mediating viral replication – the process where a DNA molecule is duplicated to create two identical DNA molecules. This process is critical when a cell divides, ensuring the two new daughter cells carry the same genetic information as the parent cell.
Potential of Withanone and Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester
The researchers have identified Withanone (Wi-N), a natural compound derived from Ashwagandha, and Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE), an active ingredient of New Zealand propolis, as potential blockers of Mpro’s activity.
Indian Government’s Proactive Measures
In response to these findings, the Indian government established a task force to commence clinical studies on certain Ayurvedic medicines that could potentially boost the immune system and help manage the coronavirus. The ‘AYUSH Sanjivani’ App was also launched to compile data on the usage of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-rigpa, and Homoeopathy) therapies and their impact on COVID-19 prevention.
The Power of Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha, or Withania somnifera, is a renowned medicinal herb known for enhancing immunity. Classified as an adaptogen, it assists the body in managing stress. Additionally, Ashwagandha boosts brain function, reduces blood sugar levels, and alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression. It has shown promising results in treating both acute and chronic rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease causing joint pain and damage throughout the body.
The Benefits of Propolis
Propolis, also known as bee glue, is a resinous mixture prepared by honey bees by combining saliva, beeswax, and gum from tree buds, sap flows, or other botanical sources. It is commonly used to fight infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Furthermore, propolis is known for boosting the immune system and treating gastrointestinal problems.
The findings of the IIT-Delhi and AIST research are encouraging for those seeking natural, preventative measures against COVID-19. As these studies continue, they may pave the way for more integrated and holistic healthcare strategies in the future.
