The Indian Army recently purchased high altitude drones from ideaForge, a start-up established and incubated by the alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B). The contract, worth $20 million, is for a high-altitude variant of the SWITCH UAV – an indigenous system utilized in surveillance operations. This procurement represents a significant shift to a focus on indigenous technologies in defense acquisition processes in India.
The Significance of the Contract
This contract signifies a strategic turning point as it emphasizes the use of indigenous technologies in India’s defence procurement process. It demonstrates how government-funded start-ups can substantially contribute to national growth. Moreover, this marks the largest order, in terms of contract value, for any Indian equipment manufacturer involved in drone production.
Importance of UAV for the Army
The Indian Army has shown its trust in advanced indigenous technology by ordering the high-altitude version of SWITCH UAV. This drone includes vertical take-off and landing capabilities, making it a fixed-wing hybrid Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
Coming in at about 2.6m long and 1.8m wide, and weighing less than 6.5kg, the SWITCH UAV offers advanced flight time with a range that extends up to 15 km. The drone’s design houses higher safety measures, ensuring simple operation with additional fail-safe redundancies. These features make it ideal for long-duration operations, even in harsh environments, and ensure it’s a reliable tool for day and night surveillance in Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
Additionally, the SWITCH UAV finds application in Photogrammetry – a technology that reliably procures information about physical objects and the environment through the recording, measurement, and interpretation of photographic images and patterns of electromagnetic radiant imagery.
Other Uses of the UAV
Beyond defense applications, the SWITCH UAV is also useful in several other sectors. For instance, it can be used for crowd monitoring during large public events or gatherings to ensure public safety, or in disaster management scenarios where accurate real-time visual information is crucial for response teams.
Furthermore, drones like the SWITCH UAV can play a pivotal role in precision agriculture, providing farmers with accurate data about their crops which can significantly improve yield. Similarly, in mining operations, drones are often used for surveying and mapping, helping to increase efficiency and safety in these industries.
In summary, the contract between the Indian Army and ideaForge not only symbolizes a shift towards indigenous technologies but also provides a versatile tool that can be utilized across various sectors of society. This marks a significant stride in India’s defense procurement process ever increasing reliance on homegrown technological innovations.
