Centre Urges Uttarakhand to Control Covid-19 at Kumbh Mela

Our attention has recently been drawn to the ongoing Kumbh Mela religious gathering in Haridwar, Uttarakhand. The Central Government has highlighted the urgent need for the Uttarakhand Government to implement stricter measures to manage and mitigate the spread of COVID-19 during this event.

Insights into Kumbh Mela

Kumbh Mela holds a special place on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This event, considered the grandest peaceful congregation of pilgrims globally, is characterized by the ritual of bathing or immersing oneself in a sacred river. Kumbh Mela is organized at four different locations – Nashik (Godavari River), Ujjain (Shipra River), Haridwar (Ganges River), and Prayag (confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati river). This confluence site is known as ‘Sangam.’

Cultural Diversity and Unique Features of Kumbh Mela

One of the factors that give Kumbh Mela its compelling charm is the variety of social and cultural activities that it introduces due to its rotation across distinct cities in India. Although it traditionally recurs every 12 years at each site, there have been instances where it occurred only a year apart at the locations. The festival also features nominal events such as the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which takes place midway, around the sixth year.

In Allahabad, another important event, Maagh Mela, is observed annually during the Hindu month of Maagh (mid-January to February). This event is also referred to as Ardh Kumbh Mela and Kumbh Mela when it takes place in the sixth and twelfth years, respectively.

Timing Anomaly in the Current Kumbh Mela

Interestingly, the current Kumbh Mela in Haridwar is being held after 11 years, not 12, due to specific favorable dates. This unusual occurrence has happened for the first time in eight decades. The festival stands out, combining astronomy, astrology, spirituality, traditional rituals, and diverse socio-cultural customs and practices. It presents an immense wealth of knowledge.

The structure of imparting this wisdom is through the sacred relationship between teachers (gurus) and students (shishyas) in the ashrams and akhadas. This connection forms the bedrock of preserving and propagating the knowledge and skills related to Kumbh Mela.

About UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

This esteemed list includes intangible heritage elements that reflect the diversity of cultural heritage and promote its significance. Established in 2008, this list was initiated when the Convention for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was implemented. It acknowledges and appreciates numerous cultural treasures from India.

The Kumbh Mela in its entirety represents a rich tapestry of Indian culture, spiritual practices, folklore, and social customs, all interwoven with cosmic concepts. However, its ongoing edition is under careful scrutiny to ensure all necessary precautions are followed in the wake of the ongoing pandemic.
