Recently, the Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 323 took a significant leap forward with the commissioning of its new unit, the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv Mk III. This indigenously built aircraft marks an important milestone in India’s growing aviation prowess.
About the ALH Dhruv
The ALH Dhruv, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), is an Indian state-owned aerospace and defence company. Under the management of the Ministry of Defence and headquartered in Bangalore, HAL launched the ALH Program in 1984, signalling a strategic shift towards domestic helicopter production.
The ALH Dhruv, a twin-engine, multi-mission new generation helicopter, falls under the 5.5 ton weight category. It is powered by the Shakti engine, also produced by HAL. The Dhruv comes in four major variants – Mk-I, Mk-II, Mk-III, and Mk-IV, each representing a step-up in terms of features and capabilities.
Features of the ALH Dhruv Mk III
The Mk III aircraft is an upgrade from its predecessor, the Mk I. It has enhanced features that are designed to optimize performance in low visibility scenarios, making it ideal for search and rescue operations even at night.
The aircraft is equipped with a 0.7 mm gun, introducing a substantial capability improvement for low-intensity maritime operations (LIMO). In addition, the automatic flight control system of the Mk III is significantly superior to the previous models, bringing in a high degree of precision and reliability.
