Unraveling the Complexity of Side Channel Attacks (SCAs)
SCAs are security exploits that gather information from or influence a system’s functionality without directly targeting the program. Instead, they exploit indirect effects of the system’s hardware. SCAs aim to extract sensitive data, such as cryptographic keys and proprietary machine learning models, through variables like power consumption, timing information, and electromagnetic leaks. Known also as sidebar attacks or implementation attacks, SCAs can be used to extract highly confidential data.
Emerging Concerns About SCAs: The New Reality of Cyber Threats
While traditionally difficult to execute on modern systems, SCAs have become more feasible given the rapid advancements in machine learning algorithms, improved computing powers of devices, and increased sensitivities of measuring devices. This have raised concerns about the new realities of cyber threats.
Breaking Down the New Chip Architecture: A Shield Against SCAs
The novel chip created by the Indian researchers is designed to provide robust protection against SCAs while consuming significantly less power. It is minute in size and can be easily incorporated into various devices like smartwatches and tablets. The chip’s unique mechanism, known as near-threshold computing, crunches data in a way that any information leaked through power consumption measurements during an SCA would amount to nothing but indecipherable gibberish.
Challenges with the Use of the Low-Energy Security Chip
While the low-energy security chip holds promise for enhanced IoT security, it comes with some caveats. Its implementation could result in at least a five-fold increase in energy consumption and might require more system memory to store information. In addition, this architecture only shields against energy consumption-based SCAs and offers no defense against electromagnetic SCAs.

The applications of IoT are already intertwined with our everyday lives, from waking up to alarms on smartphones that automatically switch on geysers, to smart refrigerators that detect when groceries are running low and reorder them.
