Government Unveils Agnipath Scheme for Armed Forces Recruitment

The Government of India recently introduced a new scheme named ‘Agnipath’ aimed at recruiting motivated young aspirants into the Indian Armed Forces for a duration of four years.

A Closer Look at The Agnipath Scheme

The Agnipath Scheme is a unique recruitment initiative by the government targeting patriotic and motivated youth to serve in the Indian Armed Forces – Army, Navy, and Airforce. This scheme will allow the recruitment of around 45,000 to 50,000 soldiers each year, a majority of whom will step out of service after four years. Post the four-year service, only 25% of this batch will resume their respective services for an extended period of 15 years.

Eligibility Criteria of The Scheme

The Scheme is aimed for personnel below officer ranks, excluding those who join the forces as commissioned officers. Commissioned officers, often holding a commission under the President’s sovereign authority, are the highest-ranked officers in the Indian armed forces. Aspiring candidates in the age group of 17.5 years to 23 years qualify to apply for this scheme.

Objective of Introducing the Scheme

The primary objective of introducing the Agnipath Scheme is to provide an opportunity to the patriotic youth with high spirits and motivation to serve the nation by joining the Armed Forces. Implementing this scheme is expected to reduce the average age profile of the Indian Armed Forces by about 4 to 5 years.

Benefits Entailed to The Agniveers

Upon completing the four-year service, the soldiers, referred to as the Agniveers, will be entitled to a one-time ‘Seva Nidhi’ package worth Rs. 11.71 lakhs, inclusive of their accrued interest. In addition to this, they will also receive a life insurance cover amounting to Rs. 48 lakhs for the four years. The payout, in case of death, will be over Rs. 1 crore inclusive of the pay for the unserved tenure.

Concerns Revolving Around the Scheme

Despite the unique benefits, the scheme has its fair share of concerns. Being a short-term contract of only four years, it becomes challenging for the recruits to find another job post their service, thereby leading to employment concerns. These soldiers, despite being given technical training to support the ongoing operations, will exit the service after four years, which could potentially create a void. Additionally, soldiers hired under this scheme are not entitled to any pension benefits, making it essential for them to seek a second job to support themselves and their families.

Significance and Impact on the Country

The scheme is designed to train and create “future-ready” soldiers, indirectly leading to more employment opportunities in various fields. The skills and experience gained during the four-year tenure are anticipated to have a positive impact on the economy by adding a higher-skilled workforce. This aspect of the scheme will be beneficial for productivity gain and overall GDP growth.
