22nd National Fish Farmers Day Celebrated in India

India commemorated the 22nd annual National Fish Farmers Day on 10th July 2022. Organized by the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) in collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, this event serves to demonstrate solidarity among fish farmers, fishermen, and all stakeholders affiliated with the fishing industry countrywide.

The Genesis and Role of the National Fisheries Development Board

Founded in 2006, the NFDB initially functioned as an autonomous organization under the purview of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. However, it currently operates within the framework of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying. The organization’s primary mission is to augment fish production and productivity across the nation. It also serves the purpose of coordinating the development of fisheries in a holistic and integrated manner.

Objectives and Significance of National Fish Farmers Day

The National Fish Farmers Day is a tribute to scientists Dr. K. H. Alikunhi and Dr. H. L. Chaudhury, who successfully introduced the revolutionary Hypophysation technology (induced breeding) to Indian Major Carps on 10th July 1957. This day is important for recognizing the achievements of fish farmers, water-sector entrepreneurs (aquapreneurs), and fisherfolk in enhancing the nation’s fisheries sector. Furthermore, it emphasizes the need for sustainable methods of managing our fisheries resources.

The Impact and Importance of the Fisheries Sector

Fisheries play a crucial role in India’s economic development and are referred to as the “sunrise sector” due to their untapped potential. India ranks second globally in terms of fish production through aquaculture and fourth in fish exports, contributing to 7.7% of worldwide fish production. The sector currently provides livelihood to over 2.8 crore people in the country, with a further potential to increase.

Opportunities and Challenges in the Fisheries Sector

The fisheries sector presents numerous opportunities for scalable business solutions that would benefit fishermen and fish farmers. However, realizing its full potential requires technological advancements that enhance the productivity, efficiency, and overall yield of the fisheries value chain.

Government Initiatives Related to Fisheries

Various initiatives have been launched to promote the development of the fisheries sector in India. These include the Blue Revolution scheme introduced in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana which aims to generate direct and indirect employment, and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) which encourages private investment in fisheries infrastructure.

Furthermore, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), established in 1972, serves as the central coordinating agency for fishery production and allied activities. Its role is supplemented by novel projects such as the Seaweed Park in Tamil Nadu and the Fisheries Startup Grand Challenge, both aimed at promoting innovation within the sector.
