ICAO and ISA Sign MoU for Aviation Sector Solarization

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) have recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This historic event took place during the 42nd session of ICAO Assembly in Montreal, Canada. Remarkably, Cochin International Airport in India made headlines in 2015 when it became the world’s first completely solar-powered airport.

Understanding the MoU

This MoU carries forward the legacy of ISA marking a novel commencement for using solar energy in the global civil aviation sector. Essentially, the agreement aims to facilitate the solarization of the aviation sector across all ISA Member States. Furthermore, the MoU is intended to regulate the growth of CO2 emissions in this sector, aligning with India’s Net Zero Targets. To effectively implement these objectives, the agreement champions the delivery of information, advocacy, capacity building, and demonstration projects.

India’s Net Zero Target

India has made a bold commitment towards achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2070 as part of its COP 26 pledge. Furthermore, India aims to install 175 GW of renewable energy, out of which 100 GW will be derived from solar energy by 2022. Additionally, the country intends to reduce emission intensity by 33-35% by 2030. These ambitious targets are designed to extend the reach of solar energy to the most remote villages and communities.

About the International Solar Alliance (ISA)

The ISA was co-founded by India and France in 2015. This action-oriented, member-driven platform is dedicated to fostering the increased deployment of solar energy technologies. The fundamental goals of ISA include facilitating energy access, ensuring energy security, and driving energy transitions in its member countries. The ISA serves as the primary agency for implementing the One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) initiative aimed at transferring solar power generated in one region to satisfy the electricity demands of other regions.

The ISA Headquarters is based in India, with its Interim Secretariat being established in Gurugram. To date, 109 countries have signed the ISA Framework Agreement, and 90 have ratified it. All member states of the United Nations are eligible to join the ISA. Notably, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has accorded Observer Status to ISA, a provision that can foster regular and well-defined cooperation between the Alliance and the United Nations, benefitting global energy growth and development.

About the International Civil Aviation Organisation

Established in 1944, the ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations. The foundation of this organization was laid with the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation on December 7, 1944, in Chicago. Also known as the ‘Chicago Convention,’ this agreement established the fundamental principles enabling international air transport. This convention also marked the inception of the ICAO.

India is one of 193 members of ICAO. The organization’s headquarters is situated in Montreal, Canada. The ICAO remains instrumental in standardizing and regulating peaceful global air navigation.
