The Civil Aviation Sector of India has witnessed monumental growth over the last few years, as highlighted in the 4th Heli-India Summit 2022 held in Jammu and Kashmir. A host of schemes, initiatives, and projects announced at the summit are poised to further accelerate this growth, offering new opportunities for the sector.
The 4th Heli-India Summit 2022
Recently, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation inaugurated the 4th Heli-India Summit 2022. The main theme of the summit was “Helicopters for Last Mile Connectivity.” At the summit, significant strides in the Civil Aviation sector were highlighted, including the increase of airports from 74 to 141 in seven years. Furthermore, there are plans to build a civil enclave in Jammu and expand Srinagar’s terminal threefold.
Highlights of the Summit
The development of the Fractional Ownership Model and the initiation of Project Sanjeevani are among the key highlights of the summit. The Fractional Ownership Model is aimed at reducing the cost of acquiring helicopters and airplanes by pooling capital resources from multiple owners. Project Sanjeevani seeks to provide Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) with a helicopter stationed at AIIMS Rishikesh, capable of servicing within a 150km radius.
Indian Civil Aviation Sector: A Snapshot
The Civil Aviation industry in India has grown exponentially during the last three years, making it one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. The industry can be classified into scheduled air transport service, non-scheduled air transport service, and air cargo service. Interestingly, India holds the 7th position in the world’s largest civil aviation markets and is projected to become third-largest by 2030.
Opportunities and Growth
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policies allow 100% FDI under the Automatic route for Ground Handling Services and Maintenance Repair and Overhaul Services. The Indian Civil Aviation MRO market is expected to grow from USD 900 million to USD 4.33 billion by 2025. Additionally, the government aims to develop 100 airports by 2024 under the UDAN Scheme.
Related Initiatives
Several initiatives have been launched to support the growth of the Indian Civil Aviation Sector. These include Heli-Sewa Portal, HeliDisha, the Helicopter Accelerator Cell, Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN), and the Krishi UDAN 2.0 scheme. These initiatives are aimed at improving processes, creating awareness, resolving issues, and developing the regional Aviation market.
Way Forward
As per industry stakeholders, Civil Aviation is not just a sector of growth for India but also a global need. It offers economic and employment multipliers that can significantly boost the country’s output. However, the success of India’s Civil Aviation sector hinges on rational decision-making, high-quality services, cost-effectiveness, and passenger interest. With the right strategies and focus, India could very well become the third-largest aviation market by 2020.
