Supreme Court Seeks Reports on Afzal Khan Tomb Demolition

The Supreme Court of India recently requested reports from the Maharashtra government regarding the demolition drive around the tomb of Afzal Khan. This order came amidst controversy on whether due process was adhered to in removing the purportedly unauthorized structures around the tomb. The court asked for reports showing the nature of these structures and the demolition procedures followed. Responding to this, the Maharashtra government announced that the operation was completed and that all illegal structures built on government and forest land had been razed.

Understanding the Controversy Surrounding the Tomb of Afzal Khan

Several Hindu groups claim that the Hazarat Mohammad Afzal Khan Memorial Society has illicitly expanded the tomb’s area by undertaking unauthorized constructions. Back in 2004, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) application was submitted by an individual demanding these demolitions. It was also claimed by the Hindu groups that the Society glorified an “enemy of Swaraj” in “Shivaji’s own land” by hosting various activities to honor the deceased commander.

Digging Deeper into the History: Who was Afzal Khan?

Afzal Khan was a noted 17th-century commander serving under the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. His prominence grew with the increasing influence and control of Chhatrapati Shivaji over the region; Khan was perceived as the potential force to quell Shivaji’s dominance in the Deccan.

Khan assembled a force comprising 10,000 cavalry and proceeded from Bijapur to Wai, wreaking havoc and pillaging Shivaji’s territory en route. In response, Shivaji convened a war council at the Pratapgarh fort. Although his advisors overwhelmingly suggested peace, Shivaji stood his ground and planned a meeting with Khan instead.

The Epic Clash: Shivaji vs Afzal Khan

The meeting between the two leaders took an unexpected turn when a seemingly friendly embrace escalated into an attack. Shivaji came out victorious, which was followed by a devastating defeat of the Adil Shahi army by the Marathas.

Legend has it, as per Maratha sources, that the remains of Khan were buried at the fort and a tomb was built on Shivaji’s orders. Displaying grace in victory, Shivaji ordered the construction of a tomb over Khan’s remains and erected a tower called ‘Afzul Buruj’ at Pratapgarh in his honor. The sword of Afzal Khan was treasured as a valuable trophy in the armory of Shivaji and his descendants.

The Aftermath: A Saga of Demolition and Dispute

Controversies surrounding this historical edifice have continued to surface over time. The most recent contention involves accusations of unauthorized expansion of the tomb by the memorial society. Hindu groups allege that Society is trying to glorify the enemy on the land of Shivaji, leading to heated discussions and legal battles. The situation demanded intervention from the topmost judicial authority, the Supreme Court, initiating a series of events that promise to bring clarity and resolution to this ongoing siege of history and heritage.
