Education Ministry Aids 14,000 Displaced Manipur Students

In response to the recent ethnic violence taking place in Manipur, a relief plan has been implemented to aid over 14,000 school children who have been displaced. The conflict arose after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held on May 3, 2023, ignited by the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The Meitei people, also referred to as Manipuris, primarily inhabit the Imphal Valley of Manipur and communicate in their native Meitei language. Their community is structurally organized into clans and has established settlements in other states such as Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.

Introduction: PM-YASASVI Scheme

To support the education of students belonging to economically backward class (EBC), Other Backward Class (OBC), SC, Denotified, Nomadic and semi-Nomadic Tribes(DNT), the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has initiated the PM Young Achievers Scholarship Award Scheme for Vibrant India (PM-YASASVI).

The scheme includes Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships, Top Class School and College Education for students belonging to OBC, EBC, and DNT categories, along with the construction of hostels for both boys and girls from the OBC category.

Increase in Mental Health Cases within Central Armed Police Forces

The Ministry of Home Affairs has reported an alarming increase in mental health cases within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), marking a 38% rise from 3,584 in 2020 to 4,940 in 2022.

Psychiatric cases encompass a wide range of mental health disorders including depression, characterized by persistent feelings of sadness; bipolar disorder, typified by extreme mood swings, and schizophrenia, a severe disorder leading to hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.

A significant increase has also been noticed in the number of personnel opting for voluntary retirement post-pandemic, with 11,211 personnel retiring in 2022 alone, indicating potential dissatisfaction and burnout among the workforce.

Aadi Perukku Festival 2023

Aadi Perukku, also known as Pathinettam Perukku, is a prominent festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, marking the onset of the monsoon season. Falling on the 18th day of the Aadi month of the Tamil Calendar, the festival symbolizes gratitude towards the life-sustaining properties of water.

During the celebration, people gather near river banks, especially the Kaveri River, to perform rituals and offer prayers, rejoicing the increased water levels that the monsoons bring, benefitting sowing and vegetation across the region.
