The Union Minister of Science & Technology, recently unveiled ‘Namoh 108’, an innovative lotus variety developed by the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research -National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI), Lucknow. This lotus variety, discovered in Manipur, stands out with its 108 petals and blooms from March to December. This flower’s genome has been sequenced, making it the only Indian lotus variety with a sequenced genome, and modifications have been made to its characteristics facilitating cultivation outside Manipur.
The Remarkable ‘Namoh 108’ Lotus Variety
The ‘Namoh 108’ lotus variety is a significant discovery by CSIR-NBRI. Found in Manipur, this lotus variety sets itself apart with an impressive count of 108 petals. Its blooming period extends nearly throughout the year, from March till December. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, ‘Namoh 108’ is rich in nutrients.
The uniqueness of ‘Namoh 108’ doesn’t end there. This variety is the only Indian lotus with a sequenced genome. The sequencing process was undertaken to enhance the flower’s attributes. The flower’s characteristics have been modified to enable its cultivation beyond Manipur as well.
Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa Triumphs in Chess World Cup 2023
In the Chess World Cup 2023 held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa clinched a victory over Fabiano Caruana, the World No. 3 in a tie-breaker round. The tournament, organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is globally recognised. FIDE, established in 1924, oversees the overall functioning of the chess world from its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Praggnanandhaa is the youngest Indian grandmaster, and his talent in chess has been recognised not just nationally, but globally too. He had already made a mark by winning the World Youth Chess Championship (under-18) in 2019 and the Asian Continental Chess Championship (open) in 2021.
Ecuador’s Stand Against Amazon Oil Drilling
In a bold move, Ecuador rejected oil drilling in a protected Amazon area known for its uncontacted tribes and exceptional biodiversity. The Yasuni National Park, a UNESCO-designated world biosphere reserve since 1989, is threatened by oil exploration. In a testament to the people’s environmental consciousness, over 90% of the ballots cast were against oil exploration.
Student-Led Water Parliament for Conservation
Shyam Sadan School, located in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, has been leading by example in water conservation. Within a year, the school established a ‘Jal Sansad’ or water parliament in mid-2022. This initiative encourages students to undertake various water conservation activities.
The students conduct audits to keep track of water usage, organise awareness campaigns and maintain digital records. The school also promotes rainwater harvesting, utilising the harvested water for its nutrition garden. This approach highlights the importance of integrating innovative water-saving practices into our daily lives.
