Mocímboa da Praia is a port city in northern Mozambique, located in Cabo Delgado province. Rwandan military announced recently that it had taken control of this port, the last stronghold of the Islamic extremists. This is a seen as a major win for Mozambique’s war against militants in the north.
Mocímboa da Praia hosts one of Africa’s biggest gas fields. It lies on the Indian coast, acting as a border post for travelling to and from Tanzania. Ansar al-Sunna, an Islamic group linked to ISIL, gained control of the port city last year.
