India and Maldives: The Recent Military Exercise

The 11th edition of the Joint Military Exercise EKUVERIN between India & Maldives is currently taking place at Kadhdhoo Island, Maldives. This event has drawn significant attention in recent news.

Background of the Joint Military Exercise

Exercise Ekuverin, meaning ‘Friends’ in the Maldivian language, has been a regularly conducted military event between India and Maldives since its inception in 2009. The collaborative effort alternates locations between India and Maldives and is typically spread over 14 days. Its main focus is enhancing interoperability between the two forces for carrying out effective counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations.

The 15th Biennial Tri-lateral Coast Guard Exercise ‘Dosti’

An essential backdrop to the Joint Military Exercise Ekuverin is the biennial tri-lateral Coast Guard Exercise ‘Dosti.’ This event involves India, the Maldives, and Sri Lanka and was most recently held in the Maldives. Echoing the goal of Ekuverin, ‘Dosti’, which means ‘friendship’, also aims to strengthen ties and improve collaborative efforts between the involved countries.

Objectives and Focus of the Exercises

The key objective of the Joint Military Exercise Ekuverin is to enhance interoperability between the Indian and Maldivian forces. This interoperability is particularly in relation to executing counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations under a semi-urban environment as per the United Nations mandate. On the other hand, the tri-lateral exercise ‘Dosti’ focuses on enhancing collaboration between the coast guards of the three participating countries.

Cultural and Sports Activities

While the central theme of these exercises revolves around defense and security, they also incorporate cultural and sports activities. These events aim to boost defence cooperation and bilateral relations between India and Maldives. They offer an opportunity for the participants to share and learn from each other’s cultural experiences, thus promoting mutual understanding and respect.

Impact on India-Maldives Relations

These joint military exercises have become a significant component of India’s relationship with the Maldives. They contribute towards strengthening the bond between the two countries amidst the emerging security dynamics in the Indian Ocean Region. Furthermore, they play a crucial role in ensuring peace and stability in the region and highlight the importance of strategic partnerships between nations.

Conclusion

The 11th edition of the Joint Military Exercise EKUVERIN and the 15th edition of the biennial tri-lateral Coast Guard Exercise ‘Dosti’ are more than just military collaborations. They are platforms that foster diplomatic ties, encourage cultural exchange, and maintain regional peace and stability. Their significance is especially prominent considering the recent security developments in the Indian Ocean Region.
