12 Indian Beaches Contend for Blue Flag Certification

The Union Environment Ministry of India recently chose 12 beaches to compete for the prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ certification. This globally recognized voluntary eco-label is awarded to beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators that meet and maintain stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria. The objective of this initiative is to promote an ecosystem of cleanliness and sustainable development in the coastal regions of the country.

About Blue Flag Certification

The Blue Flag Programme is managed by the international non-profit organization FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). Established in France in 1985, the FEE expanded its operations beyond Europe in 2001 to promote environmental education on a global scale. One of its prominent initiatives is the Blue Flag certification, which recognizes eco-friendly beaches and marinas around the world.

The certification is bestowed upon any beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator that manages to meet nearly 33 different criteria. These include maintaining high water quality standards, providing adequate waste disposal facilities, ensuring easy access for the disabled, and having essential first-aid equipment.

Global Blue Flag Recognition

The Blue Flag certification has seen wide acceptance globally, with Spain leading the list of countries having the most number of Blue Flag certified beaches at 566. Greece and France follow closely with 515 and 395 respectively. This recognition significantly impacts the tourism sector of these countries as it enhances their reputation as clean and safe tourist destinations.

Initiatives by Union Environment Ministry

In order to aid Indian beaches in acquiring the Blue Flag certification, the Union Environment Ministry has given permissions for specific structures. These infrastructures include container toilet blocks, change rooms, shower panels, mini grey-water treatment plants, solid waste recycling plants, and off-grid solar photovoltaic panels. The only restriction is that they must be located a minimum of 10 meters from the high tide line to prevent any environmental damage.

Fact Table

Blue Flag Certification: Benefits for India

Achieving the Blue Flag certification can provide numerous benefits for India. It can boost the country’s tourism sector by attracting more international tourists seeking clean and safe beach destinations. Furthermore, it will encourage local businesses and communities to maintain higher environmental standards for sustainable development. In the long term, this could be instrumental in promoting eco-tourism and conserving the country’s stunning coastal ecosystems.
