PBD, commemorated each year on January 9th, recognises and celebrates the contribution of the Overseas Indian community to India’s progress. The latest event was the 17th three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention inaugurated by the Prime Minister in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. On this occasion, a digital exhibition showcasing the diaspora’s involvement in the freedom struggle was launched, along with the issuance of a commemorative stamp, ‘Surakshit Jaayen, Prashikshit Jaayen.’
Delving into the History of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
Historically, the date marking the annual celebration of PBD, January 9th, holds immense significance. It marks the day in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi, deemed as the greatest Pravasi, returned to India from South Africa. He spearheaded the country’s freedom struggle, thereby revolutionising Indian lives. Initiated in 2003, the format of PBD underwent a revision in 2015 – shifting from an annual to a biennial event, and transforming into a theme-based conference.
The Unique Theme for PBD 2023
The theme for PBD 2023 has been assigned as “Diaspora: Reliable partners for India’s progress in Amrit Kaal”. It highlights the integral role that the diaspora plays in propelling India’s growth. The Government also presents the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award on this day. This highest accolade is bestowed upon Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), or organisations run by NRIs or PIOs who significantly contribute to promoting India on the global stage.
The Significance of PBD
The PBD serves as a significant platform for the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and local citizens. The conventions foster networking opportunities among overseas Indians living worldwide, enabling them to share varied experiences in distinct fields.
Government Initiatives for Overseas Indians
To support and engage with the overseas Indian community, the government has implemented various initiatives. The Pravasi Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PKVY) aims to institutionalise skill development for emigrant Indian workers. The Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) allots 100 scholarships annually for undergraduate courses to PIO and NRI students. The ‘Know India Program’ (KIP) familiarises Indian-origin youth with their roots and contemporary India. The E-migrate System serves as a database for foreign employers, safeguarding emigrants from exploitation. Finally, the VAJRA (Visiting Advanced Joint Research Faculty) Scheme allows leading NRI professionals to serve in Indian public sector organisations for a short duration, contributing their expertise.
