2nd CCTNS Hackathon and Cyber Challenge Inaugurated in Delhi

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) recently initiated the 2nd CCTNS Hackathon and Cyber Challenge 2020-21 in New Delhi. This unique event is the next step following the successful conclusion of the initial Hackathon & Cyber Challenge in March 2020. The primary objective of this hackathon is to strengthen the abilities and understanding of law enforcement personnel, enabling them to effectively tackle emerging threats through intelligent strategies.

About the 2nd CCTNS Hackathon and Cyber Challenge

The second iteration of the CCTNS Hackathon and Cyber Challenge invites contributions from various sectors. Police officers, especially those at the frontline, academics, industry professionals, and students are all encouraged to participate. The goal is to enhance existing IT applications and identify new ones to bolster the CCTNS ecosystem.

Launch of the Mobile App – “Locate Nearest Police Station”

A key highlight of the function was the launch of the “Locate Nearest Police Station” mobile app. This user-friendly application intends to aid diverse user groups, including women commuters, interstate travelers, domestic and international tourists, particularly during emergencies. The app provides the facility to dial 112 for immediate assistance.

Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems Overview

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS), a planned scheme, was conceived based on the experiences from the non-planned Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA) scheme.

CCTNS Launch and Objectives

Introduced as a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the CCTNS was approved in 2009 and proposed automation for approximately 14,000 police stations across the country along with 6,000 higher offices in the police hierarchy.

The CCTNS was aimed at enhancing police efficiency and transparency, improving citizen-centric services through ICT, and providing investigating officers with tools, technology, and information to facilitate crime investigation and criminal detection.

Recent Initiatives Linked to CCTNS

Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the National Intelligence Grid (NATGRID) and the NCRB allowing NATGRID access to the CCTNS database.

About the National Crime Records Bureau

Established in 1986 under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the New Delhi-based NCRB functions as a comprehensive repository of information on crime and criminals. The NCRB was formed following recommendations from the National Police Commission (1977-1981) and the MHA’s Task Force (1985).

Each year, the NCRB publishes exhaustive statistics of crime across the country in its “Crime in India” report, allowing a critical look at nationwide law and order situations. This annual report has been published continually since 1953.
