The 30th edition of the India-Thailand Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT), a crucial naval exercise, has recently been concluded in the Andaman Sea near the Strait of Malacca. This development has been making headlines because of the strategic importance and objectives associated with it.
The Naval Exercise: Context and Importance
India and Thailand initiated CORPAT along their International Maritime Boundary Line in 2005. Since then, the naval exercise is executed twice a year. The 30th edition witnessed the participation of the Indian Naval Ship (INS) Karmuk, an indigenously built Missile Corvette, and Thailand Frigate HTMS Kraburi. Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft from both navies also played an active role in this exercise.
The primary objective of this operation is to maintain safe and secure conditions for commercial shipping and international trade in a segment of the Indian Ocean, which is a critical global trade route. Simultaneously, another crucial aspect of these regular patrols is to ensure effective implementation of the United Nations Conventions on Laws of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Understanding the Role of UNCLOS
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) is an international agreement that outlines the rights and responsibilities of nations concerning the world’s oceans, laying down guidelines to use its resources, protect the environment, and preserve marine life. The convention plays a significant role in terms of addressing issues like illegal fishing activity, drug trafficking, piracy, smuggling, illegal immigration, and conducting search and rescue operations at sea. These biannual CORPAT exercises are instrumental in ensuring that the regulations laid out by UNCLOS are effectively followed.
Alignment with India’s SAGAR Vision
The India-Thailand CORPAT aligns seamlessly with the Indian Government’s vision of Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR). As a part of this approach, the Indian Navy has proactively been assisting countries in the Indian Ocean Region with Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Surveillance, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR), and other capacity building and capability-enhancement activities, on their request.
Other Military Exercises between India and Thailand
Apart from CORPAT, India and Thailand also engage in other military exercises aimed at enhancing defense cooperation and interoperability between their armed forces. These include Exercise MAITREE involving the armies of the two countries and Exercise SIAM BHARAT, which is an Air Force level exercise. These exercises along with CORPAT not only highlight the strengthening of defense ties but also help in maintaining regional security and stability.
To conclude, the regular conduct of India-Thailand CORPAT and other military exercises are vital for maintaining peace, stability, and security in the region. They underline the shared commitment of both countries to uphold the tenets of UNCLOS and contribute to regional maritime security, in line with India’s SAGAR vision.
