32nd ISTA Congress Takes Place in Hyderabad

The 32nd International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) Congress, a seminal event in the field of seed science and technology, is currently underway in Hyderabad, India. Taking place from June 26th to July 3rd, 2019, this esteemed gathering marks the first time the event has been hosted on Asian soil. Established back in 1924, ISTA has a rich history of developing and promoting standardized procedures for seed testing on an international scale.

ISTA: A Global Pioneer in Seed Testing Standards

Founded nearly a century ago, ISTA has consistently striven to develop and publish standard procedures for seed testing. Its mission is to foster uniformity in seed quality evaluation worldwide through producing internationally agreed-upon rules for seed sampling and testing. Not only does ISTA set these standards, but it also accredits laboratories that adhere to them, helping to ensure consistent practices across the globe.

The Scope and Impact of ISTA’s Work

But ISTA’s purview extends beyond just setting standards. The association also promotes research, provides international seed analysis certificates and training, and disseminates knowledge in seed science and technology. This comprehensive approach to supporting seed quality contributes to their vision of uniform seed quality evaluation worldwide. In addition, the work of ISTA members facilitates both national and international seed trading, thereby supporting global food security.

Today, the ISTA network boasts over 85 countries and distinct economies around the globe. Besides being a testament to the organization’s influence, this diversity allows for a wide array of perspectives and experiences to be brought to the table when discussing and establishing new standards or research directions.

ISTA’s Headquarters and Reach

Despite its global reach, ISTA’s headquarters are located in the heart of Europe, in Switzerland. Even so, the association’s influence reverberates far beyond its Swiss base, as illustrated by the diverse locations of its member countries and this year’s congress in Hyderabad.
