35th Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2022 Begins

The 35th Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2022, one of the premier annual events in Faridabad, Haryana, is currently taking place from March 19, 2022, until April 4, 2022. The event usually takes place in the month of February each year, but this year’s schedule has been re-set due to the coronavirus pandemic. This international fair, which was last held in 2020, aims to celebrate and endorse the skilled artisans who utilize indigenous technologies, despite facing stiff competition from cheaper machine-made imitations.

Organizers and Initiation of the Mela

This globally recognised crafts fair is an initiative of the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism. They organise this event in collaboration with several Union Ministries of the Indian government, including Tourism, Textiles, Culture, and External Affairs. The inception of this Mela dates back to 1987 when it was created as a platform to showcase the talents of skilled artisans and derived its international status in the year 2013.

A Showcase of Craftsmanship

The Surajkund Mela acts as a vibrant exhibition of the richness and diversity of handicrafts, handlooms, and the cultural fabric of India. One of its major draws is that it is considered the largest crafts fair globally, drawing participants and attendees from all corners of the earth.

Theme State and Partner Nation

Each year, a ‘Theme State’ and a ‘Partner Nation’ are chosen for the Mela to shift focus on the unique craftsmanship, culture and cuisine of that particular region or country. For 2022, Jammu & Kashmir has been selected as the Theme State, showcasing the picturesque North Indian state’s intricate handicrafts and rich, diverse culture. Additionally, the Partner Nation for this year’s event is Uzbekistan, promising viewers a deeper insight into the culture and craftsmanship of this Central Asian nation.

The Mela’s Impact on Artisan Communities

The Surajkund Mela has played a crucial role in empowering artisan communities by providing them with a broad platform to showcase their skills. This has not only helped revive various indigenous crafts that were facing the threat of extinction due to modern machine-made counterfeits but also provided these artisans with greater exposure and opportunities for economic growth.

Experiencing Cultural Diversity

The Mela is an excellent place to experience an overwhelming array of handicrafts and handlooms from different parts of India and from the Partner Nation. Along with this, visitors can enjoy a range of cultural performances and savour varied cuisine from different Indian states and from Uzbekistan, offering an all-inclusive cultural and gastronomical experience.

Conclusion

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2022 offers a unique opportunity to explore and appreciate diverse cultures, traditions, and craftsmanship. It brings light to the immense talent and skill inherent in our artisan communities and furthers the understanding and appreciation of the cultural richness and diversity of India and its Partner Nation, Uzbekistan.
