Recently, the 36th edition of the India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (India-Indonesia CORPAT), a crucial joint exercise between the Indian Navy and the Indonesian Navy, has been initiated. This exercise is a part of a longstanding tradition aimed at reinforcing their maritime ties and has been happening since 2002.
Participation and Purpose
For the 36th edition of the India-Indonesia CORPAT, the Indian Navy is participating with INS Saryu, an indigenously built Offshore Patrol Vessel, and Maritime Patrol Aircraft. The exercise is carried out along the International Maritime Boundary Line, aiming at strengthening bonds of friendship across the Indo Pacific. One of the primary objectives of this exercise is to ensure safety and security for shipping and international trade in the region.
Significance of CORPATs
The CORPAT exercises play a significant role in building understanding and interoperability between the two nations’ navies. They facilitate instituting measures for suppressing illegal unreported unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery, and piracy. Through these exercises, the two countries share their efforts to maintain a safe and secure maritime environment.
Alignment with SAGAR Vision
These coordinated patrols align perfectly with the Government of India’s vision named SAGAR (Security And Growth for All in the Region). Under this vision, the Indian navy has been actively engaging with various countries in the Indian Ocean Region for coordinated patrols, bilateral/multilateral exercises, Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance, and passage drills. The primary objective of such interactions is enhancing regional maritime security.
Other Joint Exercises with Indonesia
In addition to the ongoing CORPATs, India and Indonesia also participate in a few other military exercises. These include Samudra Shakti, a bilateral maritime exercise, and Garuda Shakti, a joint military exercise. These exercises, along with the CORPATs, highlight the dedication both countries have towards ensuring maritime security and developing stronger ties.
These joint efforts are not just symbols of the cordial relations shared by the two nations but are also significant for maintaining peace and stability in the region. By participating in such exercises, both countries continue to work together to handle the challenges of the maritime sphere effectively.
