The launch of the 375th WAP-7 electric locomotive marks milestone for India’s railway manufacturing sector. Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW)

BLW has been a pioneer in locomotive manufacturing since its inception. Since 2017, the facility has focused on producing electric locomotives, specifically the WAP-7 for passenger services and WAG-9 for freight. The plant has also expanded its operations to include manufacturing for non-railway customers and for export.

Production Achievements

In the financial year 2024-25, BLW achieved the remarkable feat of producing 375 locomotives. This brings the total production to 10,588 locomotives, which includes 2,268 electric and 7,498 diesel locomotives. The factory has also exported locomotives to 11 countries and manufactured units for non-railway clients.
