The Government of India has recently inaugurated the 4th Para Games organized by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). This significant event is a unique initiative aimed at providing equal opportunities for persons with disabilities (PwDs) in every aspect of corporate life. The motive is not only to foster inclusivity but to also contribute towards comprehensive human resource development for public enterprises within the energy sector, recognizing these individuals as highly valuable assets.
Who Are Participating in the 4th ONGC Para Games?
The games are being participated in by employees from eight central oil and gas public enterprises. These corporations have joined hands in organizing the 4th ONGC Para Games between 2nd and 4th August 2022.
A Global Standard: Format of the ONGC Para Games
ONGC has been committed to adhere to an international format for the Para Games since their inaugural edition back in 2017. This has been made possible with the support of the Paralympic Committee of India. In the initial Para Games, 120 PwD employees from ONGC partook in various games such as athletics, badminton, table tennis, and wheelchair racing.
Understanding ONGC: The Organizing Body
ONGC is a public sector company dealing primarily with petroleum. Initiated under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s guidance, ONGC’s foundation was laid in 1955. Initially known as the Oil and Gas Division under the Geological Survey of India, it was renamed as the Oil and Natural Gas Commission on 14th August 1956. Subsequently, in 1994, it was transformed into a corporation. Further recognition came when, in 1997, it was acknowledged as one of the Navaratnas by the Indian Government, and in 2010 it was accorded the status of Maharatna.
What Are Para Games?
The Paralympic Games, also known as Paralympics, are considered the most significant international event for athletes with disabilities. They advocate societal change and are held in the host city shortly after each Olympic Games. The Paralympics follow a biennial schedule, alternating between summer and winter Paralympic Games. Originating as a small gathering of British World War II veterans in 1948, the Paralympics has expanded into one of the largest international sporting events by the early 21st century, with the first official Paralympic Games being held in Rome in 1960.
