7th Indian Navy Frigate ‘Tushil’ Launched in Russia

The 7th Indian Navy Frigate of the P1135.6 class, named ‘Tushil’, was recently launched at the Yantar Shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia. This significant event came into the spotlight following the agreement signed between the Indian and Russian governments in October 2016 for the construction of four more vessels belonging to this class – two to be built in each country.

Introducing Tushil

Originally designed and constructed by Russia specifically for the Indian Navy, this newly launched ship is officially christened as ‘Tushil’. The name, derived from the ancient language Sanskrit, translates to ‘Protector Shield’.

The Talwar Class Frigates

Project 1135.6, as it’s technically known, is also identified as the Talwar Class – a subset of guided-missile frigates. These frigates are a modified version of the Krivak III-class ships, serving as the primary foundation for the Russian Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate. Before the addition of Tushil, the Indian Navy had six of these Talwar class frigates in active service.

Potent Combination of Weapons and Sensors

Tushil is a formidable entity boasting a potent combination of advanced Indian and Russian weapons and sensors. It has been equipped to operate effectively in Littoral and Blue waters, both individually and in consort within a naval task force.

Stealth Technology: A Noteworthy Feature

These frigates, including Tushil, are incorporated with “stealth technology”. This low observable technology ensures that these ships, along with other assets like aircraft, fighter jets, submarines, satellites, and missiles, stay less visible to radar, infrared, sonar, and similar detection technologies. It significantly reduces both radar and underwater noise signatures.

Amplifying the India-Russia Military Cooperation

The construction and launch of these ships underscore the long-established tradition of military technical cooperation between India and Russia. These nations have held a steady alliance, engaging in various joint ventures in defense and technology over the years.

Enhancing the Indian Navy’s Power in the IOR

These frigates, including the recent addition of Tushil, will substantially boost the power and reach of the Indian Navy operating in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). By improving the defense capabilities, these vessels play a significant role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

Providing a potent amalgam of innovative technologies, superior design, and strategic alliance, the launch of the 7th Indian Navy Frigate ‘Tushil’ is a big step forward in strengthening the maritime security apparatus of India. Its unique features and capabilities make it a force to be reckoned with in naval warfare, promising a more secure future for India’s vast coastal regions.
