Union Fisheries Minister Giriraj Singh has announced that the central government will develop Goa as the first fisheries hub of India. For this, the government will invest Rs 400 crore for this project.

- This investment will be raised jointly by the Union government, the state fisheries board, and others.
- The Union government has already provided Rs 41.47 crore to Goa for reviving the fisheries sector and ensuring safe fishing.
- Under the plan of fisheries hub, 30 fish landing jetties will also be created in the state.
- These jetties will be linked to the mainstream through the construction of roads.
- As per the Goa-based CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), a 200 sq km area in the state is feasible for cage culture.
- The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has certified 72 sq km area in the state to be brought under cage culture.
- The government will also appoint “Sagar Mitra” for each of the 70 fishing villages in Goa. These Sagar Mitras will educate people involved in fishing to strengthen the sector.
- The government is also planning to set up seaweed and ornamental fish complex in Goa.
Along with all this, a marine hatchery will be set up to provide quality seed. The cost of setting up the hatchery will be Rs 2.5 crore.
