Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a test that can determine the composition of a product at the molecular level, by applying a magnetic field. This laboratory test is currently being used globally to check for modified sugar syrups in Honey.
Top Honey Brands in India fail NMR Test
- As per the recent statement from the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), Honey sold by several major brands in India has been found adulterated with sugar syrup.
- The NMR test was conducted in a specialized laboratory in Germany.
- As per CSE, almost all the honey brands in India are adulterated with sugar syrup as 77% of the samples were found adulterated.
- Though all the top brands passed the tests of purity, 10 out of 13 samples failed the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance test.
- The three brands which passed the NMR test are- Nature’s Nectar, Saffola, and Markfed Sohna.
- CSE also reveals that sucrose syrup when added to the honey can also pass all stipulated tests.
- All the 13 samples were first tested at CALF i.e. the Centre for Analysis and Learning in Livestock and Food in Gujarat and at that time only a few failed but after the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance test 10 samples failed.
- However, brands like Dabur Honey and Zandu Pure Honey have rejected the claims of the test and said that their honey is 100% pure.
Benefits of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Test
The NMR test provides the complete chemical structure analysis of liquids and dissolved solids in a product. It can also determine the quantity of the mixed components.
