Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Visit to France and UAE

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is expected to bolster bilateral defence cooperation and strengthen ties between the countries. During his two-day visit to France, which coincides with Bastille Day celebrations, key agreements related to defence acquisitions and collaboration are anticipated.

Prime Minister’s Visit to France:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on an official visit to France and the UAE, highlighting the importance of bilateral relations. The visit to France, scheduled for July 13-14, comes at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. Prime Minister Modi will attend the French National Day celebrations in Paris as the Guest of Honour.

Focus on Defence Ties:

Expansion of bilateral defence ties is expected to be a key focus of Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France. A contingent from the Indian tri-services will participate in the Bastille Day Parade, demonstrating the growing cooperation between the two countries. Additionally, a deal for the acquisition of 26 Rafale-Marine fighters for the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier is expected to be signed. This agreement reinforces India’s commitment to strengthening its naval capabilities.

Collaboration under “Make in India” Initiative:

In line with the “Make in India” initiative, Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France is also expected to include a repeat order for the construction of three more Scorpene (Kalveri) class submarines at Mazagon Dockyards Limited. This move not only enhances India’s naval capabilities but also promotes indigenous manufacturing and technology transfer.

Defence Cooperation between India and France:

India and France have been actively collaborating in the defence sector, fostering robust cooperation and strategic partnerships. During President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to India, the two nations established an annual defence dialogue at the Ministerial level, further strengthening their ties. Regular defence exercises, such as Exercise Varuna (Navy), Exercise Garuda (Air Force), and Exercise Shakti (Army), showcase the operational readiness and interoperability between the armed forces of both countries.

France as a Major Arms Supplier:

France has emerged as a significant arms supplier for India, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Between 2018 and 2022, France accounted for 29% of India’s arms imports, making it the country’s second-largest arms supplier after Russia. The SIPRI report also highlights the substantial growth in French defence exports to India, which increased by 489% between 2013-17 and 2018-22. The purchase of 36 Rafale jets and the ongoing construction of Scorpene submarines demonstrate the depth of defence collaboration between the two nations.
