DRDO Successfully Test-Fires Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently conducted another successful test-fire of its Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile system (QRSAM). The potent system was demonstrated at the Integrated Test Range, nestled on the Odisha coast. This latest trial is part of a chain of missile tests DRDO has been executing over recent months.

QRSAM: An Advanced Canister-Based System

QRSAM is derived from canister-based technology. It implies that the system is stored and operated from specially crafted compartments known as canisters. In these compartments, the conditions are strictly regulated to ensure the preservation and performance of the system.

The innovative canister design provides several advantages. This technique makes transport and storage simplified. More importantly, the protective environment within the canister extends the shelf life of the weapons remarkably.

Features: Target Detection, Tracking and Engagement

The QRSAM system boasts the capability to detect and track moving targets. With only short halts required for accuracy, it engages with the target swiftly. The operative dynamics of the system allow it to keep up with fast-paced situations and respond promptly.

Range and Mobility: A Protective Shield for the Army

Developed primarily by DRDO, the QRSAM is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system. Its main objective is to offer a protective shield to moving armoured columns of the Army against enemy aerial attacks. The entire weapon system takes advantage of a mobile and manoeuvrable platform, providing air defence whilst on the move.

The QRSAM has been conceptualized for induction into the Army, possessing a commendable range of 25 to 30 kilometers.

Operation: A Fully Automated Command and Control System

The functionality of the QRSAM weapon system operates on an easy-to-maneuver ensemble. The assembly consists of a wholly automated command and control system, alongside two radars – the Active Array Battery Surveillance Radar and the Active Array Battery Multifunction Radar. These radars are positionable on a single launcher.

Both radars offer 360-degree coverage, further enhanced with “search on move” and “track on move” capabilities, ensuring a comprehensive surveillance system.

Inclusion of Indigenous Technology

The QRSAM system integrates compact design with advanced technology. Using a single-stage, solid propelled missile, it ensures a powerful attack. It also incorporates a mid-course inertial navigation system, developed indigenously by DRDO.

A two-way data link and terminal active seeker are parts of the system, reflecting DRDO’s commitment to fostering local technological innovations in defence.
