The Prime Ministers of India and the United Kingdom recently engaged in a virtual bilateral summit. The Indian government expressed gratitude for the swift medical aid provided by the UK in response to the harsh second wave of Covid-19 in India.
The ‘Roadmap 2030’ Strategy
An important outcome of the bilateral summit was the adoption of ‘Roadmap 2030’. This strategic undertaking aims to elevate UK-India relations to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”. It provides a framework for collaboration in various areas such as health, climate, trade, education, science and technology, and defence. A key aspect of this roadmap is expanding the UK-India health partnership to enhance global health security and pandemic resilience, including strengthening international supply chains to ensure critical medicines, vaccines and other medical products reach those in need.
Expansion of the UK-India Vaccines Partnership
Both nations agreed on expanding their existing vaccines partnership, recognizing its crucial role in global health security, providing groundwork for further collaboration in health tech innovations and inoculation strategies.
Launching the Enhanced Trade Partnership
The Enhanced Trade Partnership was launched, aiming to facilitate market access in specific sectors. The UK will open up its fisheries sector to more Indian players, create more opportunities for nurses and recognise Indian seafarers’ certificates. In return, India lifted restrictions to allow British fruit producers to export their produce to the country and improved access for medical devices.
Setting Trade Targets and Free Trade Agreement Plans
The nations announced an ambitious target of more than doubling bilateral trade by 2030. They also expressed a mutual intent to negotiate a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with the consideration of an interim trade agreement to drive early gains.
Establishing the India-UK ‘Global Innovation Partnership’
The UK is India’s second largest partner in research and innovation collaborations. The new Global Innovation Partnership aims to support the transfer of inclusive Indian innovations to select developing countries, starting with Africa.
Security & Defence: Cooperation on Maritime Domain Awareness
The summit included talks on maritime information sharing, joint trilateral exercise programs, and invitations to participate in India’s Information Fusion Centre in Gurgaon. Additionally, the UK’s Carrier Strike Group is scheduled to visit India later this year in a move to strengthen naval and air force ties.
Light Combat Aircraft Mark 2 and potential collaborations
Both countries expressed their desire for further industrial collaboration in areas such as maritime propulsion, space, and cyber. This marks the beginning of a promising era of UK-India research, capability, and industrial collaboration on Indian combat air and beyond.
Migration and Enhanced Mobility Partnership
Both countries agreed to enhance their migration relationships, making it easier for British and Indian nationals to live and work in each other’s countries. The signing of the India-UK Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) aimed at reducing illegal immigration into the UK was also welcomed by both sides.
Climate Change: Joint Efforts for COP26
Both nations committed to work together to achieve an ambitious outcome at Conference of the Parties (COP) 26. They will expand the UK-India partnership on tackling climate change by accelerating the development of clean energy and transport, protecting nature and biodiversity, and assisting developing countries adapt to the impacts of climate change.
Bilateral Military Exercises
Three military exercises – Air Force Exercise ‘Indradhanush’, Navy Exercise Konkan, and Army Exercise ‘Ajeya Warrior’ were also discussed during the summit.
New Opportunities in Post Brexit Era
This collaboration presents a great opportunity for the UK as it seeks new global partnerships post Brexit. The UK has much to offer India in education, research, civil society and the creative sector. Conversely, India’s skilled labour, technological assistance, and vibrant market will open many avenues for Britain.
