Delhi Government to Renovate 14th Century Malcha Mahal

The Delhi government has established plans recently to undertake the renovation of the historic 14th century monument, Malcha Mahal. This palace, with a history dating back to 1325, has witnessed numerous periods of India’s colourful past and is now set to regain its former glory.

The Historical Renown of Malcha Mahal

Established by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq in 1325, Malcha Mahal spent many epochs as a hunting lodge before transitioning into the residence of the descendants of the Nawab of Awadh. In recognition of Begum Wilayat Mahal of Awadh’s claim of royal lineage, the palace was bestowed upon her by the government in 1985, resulting in its moniker, ‘Wilayat Mahal’. After her untimely suicide in 1993, her children, Sakina Mahal and Prince Ali Raza took over the ownership. The princely line ended with the demise of Ali Raza in 2017 and Sakina’s prior death.

Legacy of Feroz Shah Tughlaq

Born in 1309, Feroz Shah Tughlaq ascended the throne of Delhi following the passing of his cousin Muhammad-bin-Tughlaq. This marked the beginning of his reign as the third ruler of the Tughlaq dynasty from 1351 to 1388 AD. Known for his introduction of the Jaziya system, a form of financial taxation on non-Muslim subjects for funding state expenses, he significantly shaped the fiscal policies of the state. He also pioneered the principle of military inheritance, allowing officers to retire and facilitate their offspring’s army enrolment. Instead of conventional cash payments, these officers were remunerated with land. His extensive contributions to the creation of gardens and irrigation channels earned him the title ‘father of the irrigation department’ by the British.

The Key Elements of Tughlaq Dynasty

The Tughlaq Dynasty, established by a Muslim Turkic-origin family, experienced its peak between AD 1330 and 1335 under Muhammad Bin Tughlaq’s leadership. Despite this zenith in power, the rule was tainted with systemic torture, cruelty, and rebellions which led to a rapid collapse in territorial influence post-1335. The dynasty, however, did produce three accomplished rulers namely Ghiyasuddin Tughlaq, the founder, Muhammad-bin-Tughluq, and Firuz Shah Tughlaq.

The planned refurbishment of Malcha Mahal promises to breathe fresh life into an important piece of India’s history, helping to preserve the legacy of the Tughlaq Dynasty. By enriching our understanding of erstwhile times, such efforts serve to root our present in the learnings of the past.
